Jacó, the closest beach resort to San José, is also Costa Rica’s most developed resort. Put on the map more than a decade ago by surfers and predominantly Canadian package vacationers, this central Pacific resort is still popular for its surf and budget accommodations, although the brown sand beach is below average. Though there’s not much to do in town by day, local attractions include crocodile safaris, canopy zip line adventures, and horseback riding and ATV tours. And sport fishers set out to wrestle marlin from nearby Los Sueños Marina at Playa Herradura, where the Los Sueños Marriott Beach & Golf Resort has the region’s sole fairways. Jacó has a great choice of fine-dining outlets.
Though there are plenty of things to do during the day, this is one of the country’s famous “party towns”, well known for the outstanding, eclectic nightlife that you can enjoy on the beach.
There are innumerable things to do during your vacation.
Go horseback riding along a lovely beach or visit the nearby river with its huge, famous crocodiles.
Zipline through the canopy or try sea kayaking or sailing.
Visit Arenal Volcano and sit in the hot springs watching the eruptions.
Take a real Swiss train to a real Swiss hotel (in the mountains of Costa Rica).
Learn to surf or take a Spanish class (some language schools offer surfing as well as language!).
Take a balloon ride over the jungles, monkeys screaming from below.
And, consider chartering a boat for a trip to Costa Rica’s world-famous fishing grounds just offshore..
Huge marlin that can swim 70 miles an hour and leap 10 feet from the water await.
Sometimes the schools of tuna or sailfish are thick.
Think you came a long way to get here? Whales travel from Antarctica to breed in the warm waters—as do their cousins from the Arctic. Imagine swimming thousands of miles!
